I think it's mad not to provide something for kids to write on/with.  Pencils and paper aren't free.  Not to mention, lots of kids will just forget to bring them.  A kid who can't afford to bring his own eslltniasey can't afford to participate in learning, which defeats the point of having free public school.  Writing this comment reminded me that the second district also didn't provide tissues, which I understand is pretty common but seems awful to me.  I spent years with my pockets stuffed with balls of (school provided, at least!) toilet paper to serve the same purpose.
Yep, definitely have this problem too, Polyxena. For the time being I seem to be avoiding the problem by mainly using my devices to read public domain works.
